Professional Biography: Miami native Alexa M. Parra, BSN, BSPH, RN graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Public Health degree from the University of Miami in 2016. While an undergraduate student, she was awarded the CFAR Developmental Core Summer Research Award. At the end of this internship, she co-authored a publication on the subject matter, focusing on social determinants of health related to HIV positive persons. In addition, she was also a Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Training (MHRT) scholar and participated in research studies in Santiago, Chile resulting in a poster presentation on the discrimination and stigma in the healthcare setting associated with Chilean sex workers. Following graduating in 2016, She began her nursing career in hematology/oncology and maternal. She is a recipient of the DAISY award for extraordinary nurses. Her varied experience with vulnerable populations has naturally shaped her interest to pursue research related to social determinants of health. Her aim is to create evidence-based practice that can reduce the morbidity and mortality rates of pregnant minority women.
