Name/Credentials: Cristóbal Padilla Fortunatti, BSN, MSN

Research Interests: Psychosocial outcomes of family members of critically ill patients; Post-Intensive Care Syndrome of family members of ICU survivors; nursing workload; hospital-acquired infections in the ICU.

Personal Biography:  Cristobal Padilla Fortunatti graduated with both a BSN and an MSN from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and worked for eight years as a staff nurse in a medical-surgical intensive care unit (ICU). His research interests began as an undergraduate student exploring the needs of the relatives of ICU patients and working on the cultural adaptation and validation of ICU family-related questionnaires. He also worked on a project exploring the link between the effort-reward imbalance model and burnout within the nursing ICU team and in a successful quality improvement initiative that helped to decrease ICU catheter-related bloodstream infections.

He joined the Ph.D. program in Fall 2018 to acquire additional research skills and competencies that assist him in the development of knowledge to support ICU family members. Particularly, he is interested in the construct of “family satisfaction” as a measure of the multidimensional experience of ICU family members and its potential impact on psychosocial outcomes in both family members and patients, during the ICU stay and after hospital discharge. Finally, his dissertation study aims to explore the potential moderator effect of social support on the relationship between psychological distress and family satisfaction, using a cross-sectional quantitative approach.
