Research Interests: Colorectal cancer survivors' symptoms, positive psychology, and quality of life during their acute cancer survivorship continuum (cancer diagnosis until the end of the initial treatment)
Personal Biography:
Sameena F. Sheikh-Wu is a Ph.D. candidate in Nursing Science at the University of Miami. She received her bachelor’s degree in Nursing from the University of Miami, where she was a recipient of the Florman Scholarship. She is an active volunteer with the Oncology Nursing Society's Miami-Dade Chapter and the University of Miami's Sexual Assault Resource Team. Sameena’s research focuses on colorectal cancer survivors' symptom management and quality of life during cancer survivorship and is firmly rooted in her clinical work as an oncology and hospice nurse, during which she observed survivors suffering from numerous unmanaged symptoms that negatively impacted their ability to maintain daily living activities and relationships. Sameena has received the 2021 Sigma Theta Tau International: Beta Tau Chapter PhD Scholarly Award Grant, 2020 Oncology Nursing Society's Congress Conference Scholarship, and is Nationally Certified in Medical-Surgical Nursing and Chemotherapy Biotherapy. Ultimately, Sameena's goal is to improve survivors' cancer care, symptom management, and overall quality of life. She continually strives to expand her research knowledge and skills to improve nurses at a professional and research level to benefit the survivors' cancer survivorship continuum. Dissemination of future findings will occur through publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at professional, community, and scientific level conferences. Sameena anticipates her scholarly work to advance cancer research and empower nursing through investigating and developing self-management strategies to combat symptom burden and improve survivors' patient-centered care and quality of life.
